At Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Bluegrass, we believe that even the smallest moments can make a significant difference for families with sick children. Our Pop Tab Program is a simple yet powerful way for you to support families facing medical challenges, one pop tab at a time. Last year alone, we had over 3,000 pounds of pop tabs donated to RMHC – that is approximately 3 million pop tabs! 3 million moments of individuals in our community choosing to care about the work of RMHC and the families staying in our House. Small things add up, thank you for being part of the work of supporting families.
Ways to Support through Pop Tabs
Attend a Pop Tab Palooza
Twice a year, RMHC of the Bluegrass hosts a Pop Tab Palooza to collect pop tabs as a community! During these dates alone, our Presenting Sponsor, Cohen Recycling, matches our donation. By attending one of these events, you will be DOUBLING your donation towards RMHC.

Collect with your School / Community
It is super easy and fun for all age groups and communities to participate in the collection of pop tabs. All you need is some easily opened containers (NOT milk jugs or water bottles) and start popping your pop tabs in there every time you open a drink. Create a competition or game with it to get some more fun going. You can always take your pop tabs to your local recycling company and receive the cash for aluminum or you can drop the pop tabs off at RMHC of the Bluegrass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does RMHC collect pop tabs?
Pop tabs have been a tradition at RMHC for over 40 years, showing that everyone has the ability to give back to families with sick children. We have kept up the tradition for our community members who love collecting pop tabs and who want to show their support for families, even when they’re not able to give in other ways.
What does RMHC do with the collected pop tabs?
RMHC brings all the pop tabs brought to the House to our local recycling partner, Cohen Recycling, and receives money for the aluminum. Cohen has graciously given us a higher price per pound for aluminum, making our impact an even greater one.
What do I do with my collected tabs?
RMHC would LOVE for you to bring them the week of our Pop Tab Paloozas if possible (April 24 and November 13, 2025). Those weeks, we receive a match for all donated pop tabs, so you would be doubling your impact. If those weeks are unavailable, please drop them off anytime at RMHC, 1300 Sports Center Dr, Lexington in easily opened containers!
What are some tips for collecting pop tabs?
- We advise you do NOT collect them in water jugs or milk containers as they are extremely difficult to pour the pop tabs out of when you’re ready to donate.
- Set a goal or challenge to engage the community!
- Collect tabs off of not only soda cans, but soup cans and other tops that have tabs!
How do I get the pop tab collection houses?
You can always stop by RMHC and pick up some houses on your own or contact our Community Engagement Manager, Hannah Garnett, at hgarnett@rmhclexington.org to have some mailed to you!
